What to Expect at Your First Psilocybin Session
In states with regulated programs, you work with a licensed facilitator at a licensed center. The day is long, structured, and supervised. Outside those programs, psilocybin remains a controlled substance.
This is the general shape of a session, not your clinic’s protocol and not medical advice. Every clinic does things a little differently, so ask your clinic how they work.

What to expect
Before, during, and after
Oregon and Colorado run regulated programs today. New Mexico has a medical program in law but is not enrolling patients yet, with a target of the end of December 2026.[1]
01
Before
- In Oregon, a preparation session with your facilitator is required at least 24 hours before your first dosing session.[2]
- Your facilitator reviews your health, talks through your intentions, and explains the day.
- Ask what to eat beforehand and what to bring.
- Feeling nervous is expected. This is a long, inward day. Ask every question you have.
02
During
- You arrive at a licensed service center (Oregon) or healing center (Colorado) and settle into a comfortable space.
- Your facilitator typically stays with you throughout, present but not directing the experience. You can ask them for help at any time.
- In Oregon, sessions often run four to six hours, longer at higher doses. State rules set minimum session lengths that rise with the dose.[3]
- Strong emotion is common and treated as a normal part of the process.
03
After
- You should not drive. Most people arrange a ride or nearby lodging.
- A follow-up integration session, usually within a few days, helps you process what came up.
